Boasting a population of approximately 13,000 residents, this small island measures around 6.8 square kilometers, making it an easily navigable paradise for day-trippers. Encircled by stunning coastlines stretching 15 kilometers, Xiaoliuqiu beckons travelers with its lush landscapes, vibrant coral reefs, and rich cultural heritage. 


Located just a short ferry ride from the bustling city of Donggang, this enchanting destination has become a favorite among those seeking a tranquil day escape. The journey takes around 25 minutes by ferry, offering a convenient and budget-friendly adventure for those looking to immerse themselves in the island's natural beauty and cultural wonders. If you are arriving from Kaohsiung Zuoying HSR station, you can take shuttle bus 9127D, which will bring you to Donggang Pier in approximately 50 minutes. Alternatively, if you are coming from Kaohsiung Airport, calling a taxi or using Uber will get you to Donggang Pier in around 40 minutes.

If you find yourself ready to say goodbye to this island paradise and catch the last ferry to Donggang, then off you go! The last ferry is around 17:00 pm depending on the season. However, if time permits, we highly recommend extending your stay for at least 1-2 nights on this beautiful tropical island.   • Xiaoliuqiu enjoys a tropical climate, so staying hydrated is crucial; carry a water bottle.


3. Cash is King:

  • Note that there are no ATMs on the island accepting foreign cards nor none of the shops/restaurants here accept international credit cards. Bring sufficient cash before boarding the ferry to cover expenses. The closest spots where you can withdraw cash from ATMs with international cards are the convenient stores(7-11 or Familymart) opposite to the Donggang Pier. 


4. Transportation Options:

  • Research and choose a ferry service that aligns with your schedule. Companies like LEUCO SAPPHIRE, TUNGLIU, and TAIFU operate services to Xiaoliuqiu. Check here to book online.
  • If coming from Kaohsiung, consider the shuttle bus from Zuoying HSR station or a taxi/Uber from Kaohsiung Airport.


5. Necessary Permits:

  • Ensure you have your passport or ARC for boarding the ferry to Xiaoliuqiu.
  • Some of the scenic intertidal areas in Xiaoliuqiu require a special guide who has a permit to go through, check with the local tourism information center.


6. Timing Matters:

  • Be mindful of ferry schedules to avoid missing the last one back to Donggang.
  • Plan your itinerary considering ferry departure and arrival times.

Even though I am a freedive instructor, my first visit to Xiaoliuqiu was in 2017 for a scuba diving trip to see the famous sea turtles of Xiaoliuqiu. This blog is for those total beginners, those looking to get certified and for those certified looking to do fun dives from a boat.
